What Does Real Worship Look Like?

In Week 1 of the "We Believe..." series at Cherry Hills Community Church, Pastor Curt Taylor delivered a message titled "What Does Real Worship Look Like?" He emphasized that worship is far more than the songs we sing on Sunday—it’s the way we live every day. Pastor Curt challenged the congregation to see worship as a lifestyle marked by surrender, obedience, and love for God and others. He reminded us that real worship happens when our hearts, words, and actions align with God's will. Ultimately, the message called believers to live lives that reflect God’s worth, not just during church services, but in every moment.

Message Notes

“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger. Roots entrench themselves and branches grow. The task of breaking a bad habit is like uprooting a powerful oak within us. And the task of building a good habit is like cultivating a delicate flower one day at a time.”

Slide 2
Decide now, what are the key VALUES that you want your child to develop?

Slide 3
You have time NOW to evaluate/share your own experiences and tendencies – and these WILL impact how you parent your own children.

Slide 4
Questions:

  • What was my parenting experience growing up?
  • How do I interact with my spouse, friends, and family?
  • How do we handle conflict as a couple?

Slide 5
Now what DO you want for your family/kids? Think 10-20 years down the road.

Slide 6
Simply put: If you want to parent with purpose, you’ve got to have a destination in mind.

Slide 7
Church is no different! We need to understand.

Slide 8
Jesus’ rhythm: He goes UP the mountain to spend time in prayer, He comes DOWN the mountain to spend time in fellowship with His disciples, and He sends them OUT to love others. Luke 6:12-19; Mark 3:13-14

Slide 9
Love Expressed. We are committed to worship to glorify God and grow in our relationship with Him.

Slide 10
We want to be a church who worships and glorifies God!

Slide 11
There is a difference in Scripture between praise and worship.

Slide 12
Praise (halal) is the act of joyfully declaring the greatness, goodness, and mighty works of God. It is often outward, vocal, and communal.

Slide 13
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Psalm 150:6

Slide 14
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! Psalm 100:4

Slide 15
Worship (shachah) is a deeper, more intimate response to God’s holiness, involving reverence, submission, and personal devotion. It goes beyond words and includes the posture of the heart.

Slide 16
Etiology: a story that explains the origin or reason behind a custom, name, practice, or belief. It comes from the Greek word aitia, meaning “cause.” In the context of Genesis, an etiology is a theological explanation of why things are the way they are.

After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.

When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis 22:1-14

Slide 18
By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. Hebrews 11:17-19

“Your actions reveal how badly you want something. If you keep saying something is a priority but you never act on it, then you don’t really want it. It’s time to have an honest conversation with yourself. Your actions reveal your true motivations.”
