Join us for a three-part series to explore the depth of teaching and tradition summed up in The Apostles’ Creed.
The creed is richly historical, enduring since the earliest centuries of Christian faith … a vow of baptism and a defense against false teaching.
It is clearly theological, affirming the redemptive humanity of Jesus Christ … that he was born, crucified, died, was buried, and then rose again.
And perhaps most of all, it is truly personal, beginning with “I believe” … a confession that each of us can speak only for ourselves.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into Hades.
The third day He arose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen. |
