Working with at-risk teens in East LA
Ministry Team: US Missions
Tim and Kathy Barta are serving with the Navigators in a 98% Hispanic neighborhood in Eastern Los Angeles. Their ministry includes mentoring, evangelism, prayer and shepherding of other Navigators staff.
One of their current endeavors is a partnership with the LA County Sheriff’s Department to reach youth through a program called PRIDE. Parents enroll their teens in this program if they are involved in risky behavior and are concerned about their teen’s future. This program includes one-on-one mentoring of middle and high school students as well as training for their parents. In addition to the one-on-one mentoring, the students go through a nine-week course that attempts to open their eyes to the dangers of gangs, drugs, alcohol, etc.
This is just one example of the ways in which Tim and Kathy reach out to at-risk youth. Tim and Kathy have been supported by Cherry Hills since 1986.
