Denver Rescue Mission: Family and Senior Homeless Initiative (FSHI)

Training classes will be held this month for people interested in helping mentor participants of this program designed to help homeless people become self-sufficient and find permanent housing. Since 2006, Cherry Hills volunteers have answered the call to serve by “elevating the urban poor” through this program. Contact Gary Sokol for more information.

Through a unique partnership between suburban and urban Christian leaders who share the same concern for people in need, City Ministry serves organizations and churches that provide basic needs for low-income people in the inner city.

The concentrated poverty that exists in large cities like Denver is really a combination of many negative factors converging in one place. Often, children grow up with single parents who work hard to make ends meet but who have little time to spend with their children. A lack of community resources, high crime, inadequate housing, academic failure, joblessness and teen pregnancy are just some of the factors that make life difficult for people in these urban communities.

Meeting needs and sharing Christ’s love

But thanks to the efforts of a variety of organizations and churches in the inner city, people in these circumstances have hope. Food, clothing, job training, housing, mentoring and education are just some of the services available through these church and parachurch entities. More than meeting physical needs, however, these organizations are driven by a love for Christ and his love for the poor. City Ministry provides financial, volunteer and other forms of support needed to strengthen their work.

Elevating the urban poor

Anyone with a heart for the urban poor can find a place to volunteer within City Ministry. Our network of relationships with urban Christian leaders provides a gamut of volunteer opportunities that include everything from tutoring and mentoring a child to dry walling and painting a home. At Inner-City Field Day, City Ministry introduces volunteers to urban ministry through this day of service activities. The annual City Ministry Golf Tournament raises funds that are distributed to our urban partners. And, in collaboration with Discover the World, City Ministry conducts one-day mission trips in the inner city.
