Love was in the air last Sunday as over 2300 volunteers served at our 3rd annual LOVE in Action Community Service Day. Take a look below at how our service impacted our community. When you break it down, we accomplished in two hours what would have taken 3.5 people working full time for a year to do.

2012 Service Opportunity Statistics

Schools in Highlands Ranch/Sedalia/Castle Rock

Location: 37 schools (28 elementary, 4 middle, and 5 high schools) located throughout Highlands Ranch (all areas)

2012 Statistics:

• Over 200 gallons of parking lot striping paint (while) and over 1,000 parking spaces painted

• Another 200 gallons of paint for crosswalks and directional arrows (white); handicap parking spaces (blue); and curbs (red and yellow).

• 315 yards of fibar mulch (put into playground pits) – that equates to over 1,500 wheelbarrow loads of fibar mulch

• 70 yards of regular mulch (placed under trees, shrubs and in mulch beds) -- that equates to over 335 wheelbarrow loads of regular mulch

Meals for Police (Sheriff)

Locations: Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch

2012 Statistics:

Meals were provided and delivered to local police/sheriff offices.

Backcountry Wilderness Area in Highlands Ranch

Location: Backcountry Wilderness Area (Backcountry)

Background: The Backcountry (which consists of over 8,000 acres or 13 square miles of some of the best wildlife habitat on the Front Range) provides residents with unprecedented opportunities to enjoy nature (hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and wild life viewing) while protecting and conserving natural, archaeological, historical, and cultural resources for the enjoyment of future generations.

While there are approximately 20 miles of trails in the Backcountry, much of the property is protected as a wildlife sanctuary. A wide variety of wildlife including; elk, deer, bobcats, raptors, wild turkeys, mountain lions, and bears) all live in the Backcountry.

2012 Statistics:

• Two miles of trail maintenance

• Approximately 150 barbed wire posts pulled and collected to be reused, saving the HRCA $1,000 on new posts.

• ½ acre of oak cleared to protect ponderosa pine forest and improve habitat

• ½ acre of oak thinned for fire mitigation

• Approximately 3,000 mullein weeds killed in a 15 acre meadow, preventing 300 million future seeds

• A roof/loafing shed for Ben and Buster to keep them out of the rain, snow, hail, sun, etc.

• 5 gallons of paint on an old hay shed to help keep Ben and Busters food clean and dry.

• 6 hitching posts to ensure our horses and riders are safe before and after our trail rides

Event Support (Hospitality)

Locations: Cherry Hills Community Church and other locations throughout Highlands Ranch (all areas)

Projects: Assisted with preparations for event such as volunteer registration, t-shirt distribution (Sundays prior to event and/or day of event), assembling and distribution of snack packs and providing event day support to field teams (i.e. providing water, snacks, tools, materials, supplies), other support for event as needed.

2012 Statistics:

• 35 volunteers assisted throughout the Love In Action event and on the day of the event.


 

Prayer Walking in Highlands Ranch

Locations: Throughout Highlands Ranch

Project: Teams walked throughout the Highlands Ranch community and prayed for and with people.

2012 Statistics:

• Teams prayed over 200 homes

Streets in Highlands Ranch

Locations: Throughout Highlands Ranch

Projects: Teams walked throughout the Highlands Ranch community and cleaned-up sidewalk areas along major thoroughfares (i.e., Broadway, University/Lincoln, Quebec/Monarch, and Highlands Ranch Pkwy./Colorado and Wildcat Reserve Pkwy/McArthur Ranch Rd., Town Center Dr., Plaza Dr., and Dad Clark Dr.) and other select streets.

2012 Statistics:

• 16 to 18 miles of streets were cleaned up.

Homes in Highlands Ranch

Location: Homes located throughout Highlands Ranch

Projects: Landscaped, weeded, raked, pruned, swept, painted, and general clean up of each property (as well as a variety of special projects).

2012 Statistics:

• 7 homes were spruced up.

Recreation Centers in Highlands Ranch

Locations: 4 locations in Highlands Ranch (Eastridge, Northridge, Southridge, and Westridge)

Background: The Recreation Centers consist of approximately 330,000 square feet and are situated on 35 acres of land. On an average day, over 5,000 people use these facilities for a wide variety of recreational activities, educational programs, and community events.

2012 Statistics:

Westridge

• Replaced 2.5 yards of mulch around flower beds and trees.

• Relocated 300 pounds of rocks to bare areas of rock gardens

• Removed dandelions around all common grass areas (10 acres)

• Painted bottom of light poles

Southridge

• Replaced 2.5 yards of mulch around flower beds and trees

• Painted 10 foot high privacy fence in pool area (60 linear feet)

• Removed weeds around the common grass areas (10 acres)

• Cleaned debris from gutters and curbs for parking lot.

Northridge

• Replaced 2.5 yards of mulch

• Painted black wrought iron (120 linear feet)

• Repaired and painted wood fence (60 linear feet)

Eastridge

• Replaced 2.5 yards of mulch around flower beds and trees

• Painted hand railing and fencing around outdoor pool (200 linear feet)

• Cleaned debris from gutters and curbs for parking lot

Electronic and Paper Recycling

Locations: 1 location in Highlands Ranch (Town Center)

Background: Residents in Highlands Ranch will have the opportunity to drop off electronic items for recycling at the Town Center.

2012 Statistics:

• 814 visitors/vehicles overall

• Electronic - About 90,000 pounds of computers and electronics were recycled. Computers, monitors, hard drives, vacuums, TV’s (all sizes), keyboards, radios, remotes, cell phones, stereos, laptops.

Refrigerator, treadmill and cotton candy machine were unusual this year.

Paper - 16,000 pounds of paper was shredded. Bills, receipts, old documents.
